Dearest, lovely, Melody,
I long to be your harmony
to hold you safe and close and tight
to defend you from the things that fright
to hold your hand, from now till ever
a love that death cannot break, then swagger
I wish to be someone you love

but I wont

I can't

I have no hope against the others
so many knights, so many suitors
so many daring men with bravo
flags-a-waving and trumpets playing
so much people want of a man
and your father wishes to give them your hand

And yes, I see it in your eyes

not all these men do you despise

it's only fear of what they shall do to our friend
that keeps you separate from them

And it is that look that drives me insane
that look you give to some other men
the way you seem to shine for them
you bat your eyelids and giggle and grin
a peck on the cheek and I'm really fired
my heart and head both boil over

but I bite my tongue

sometimes my hat
